EMBRACE was launched to foster inclusivity and equity for Black children in foster care and adoption through education, training, and meaningful partnerships. Over the past year, we’ve been proud of our efforts and grateful for the lessons that have brought us closer to that goal.
Some of our key accomplishments include the launch of the Kidsave-Gallup report, which provides valuable insights into adoption and foster care for Black children. We also introduced the EMBRACE newsletter, a platform to share stories, updates, and resources. Additionally, we developed culturally responsive training for Kidsave hosts, mentors, and prospective adoptive families, equipping them with the tools to create a welcome and inclusive environment. Alongside these initiatives, we have completed further data analysis on barriers LGBTQ+ couples face, Hispanic families face and have looked into why Texans and Californians don’t adopt or foster.
This journey has not been without its challenges. We were surprised by the complexities of navigating the current political landscape surrounding DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging). It is crucial to clarify the value of equity efforts through data-driven strategies that reinforce the need for focus, persistence, and the changing landscape of the communities we serve.
From these challenges, we’ve learned the value of focus. Moving forward, we will narrow our efforts to educate, and a pilot program that embodies our commitment to creating equitable opportunities for children in foster care and adoption.
